Amir Sulaimain Speaks at the MAI...SILENCE

My crew "forthelovers" participated in a coat drive this past fall at the Poet's Den in NYC.  The week of this event, I found out I was officially signing a distribution deal with Elique, who is receiving funding from Falu Enterprises/eOne Entertainment.  As a result, my brother Haz suggested I come out and we celebrate this accomplishment by giving back.  Even though I brought an old, lightly worn North Face coat with me and some snacks at the venue, I feel like I walked away from the event with more then I gave.  I walked away, inspired uplifted and encouraged by the words of Amir Sulaiman.  Below are some photos from our celebration.  I also included a link to one of Amir's poems I recorded on my iPhone, that moved me titled "How Beautiful."  Amir is a poet known for his appearance on Def Poetry performing "Danger" and "She Said I Prefer a Broken Neck."  Please take advantage of this free download.  Be still and listen......

Chris and Rihanna Reunite for a #BREEZY Holiday

I always felt there was something so magical about the holiday season.  Something about this time of the year puts people in reflection mode. Couples rekindle or break up.  Families reunite or separate.  People begin to think differently as the pressure of the New Year approaches.  They begin to look within on their accomplishments as well as forecast where they see themselves in the upcoming year.  Hence, the "New Year's Resolutions" etc.  Could Chris and Rihanna be having a moment of reflection on their drama filled relationship?  Is forgiveness in the air as a result of the holiday season?  Whatever the situation may be, they were spotted at a Knicks -vs- Lakers game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles on peaceful terms.

Chris, recently released a smash hit titled "Don't Judge Me"many speculated was to address what he went through with bad-gyal RiRi.  I really took a liking to this song and of course, you know I had to step into remix mode and do a female spin on this song.  The response is called "Don't F*** with Me" and as per social media followers, they are suggesting this is the song Rihanna should have responded with.

I agree 100% with the message in "Don't Judge Me"; that we should not judge one another regardless of what our circumstances are or were before, during or after a relationship.  However, sometimes we can behave or treat each other in ways that challenges other people's patience and ability to respond from a place of love.  This is what inspired my response.  All in the name of having fun with music, this response is an attempt for me to address that.   So, I leave you with these questions that many people are in need of the answers for:  How do you completely forgive?  Do we ever really forget?  How do we stop judging when the scars are so deep?  Check out the response by clicking on the link below.  Also, check out Chris' official video below to "Don't Judge Me."

Nicki Minaj and her Barbs fill Webster Hall for Christmas

Webster Hall promoted a Nicki Minaj event, which took place on Christmas night.  According to Ticketmaster and promoters, the event was scheduled to start at 10pm.  However, they did not let us in the venue until about 10:20pm.  Not so bad... but, it does get awkward.  Keep reading.  So, we are now in the venue and they have a hip hop room spinning random hip hop music (not Nicki's).   I personally did not want to be amongst the crowd so I waited in the lobby along with my friend who was anxious to see Nicki in the main room which was not open yet.  The lobby began to get crowded, because of course, people were there to see Nicki Minaj on the main stage and not  parlay in the hip hop room.  At this point, security got disrespectful.  Why are some security guards so disrespectful to people?  I understand it's a demanding job, but dag... I didn't do it.  Lol.  So yeah, security begins to holler that we cannot wait in the lobby because they were not opening the main stage until 12:30am.  At this point Nicki fans are like "WHAT?  The ticket says 10pm!"  Security responded with an attitude that said, I don't give a f**k, I'll body slam you if you don't move... while flashing their flashlights in our eyes.  How crazy is that?

SO, moving forward, the friend who I gifted this Nicki event to... her aunt works at Webster Hall, so she goes to get her and explain how crazy security was acting.  Auntie was able to sneak us into VIP after being tossed back and forth between a couple of security guards who had tight "bung-wholes."  Cool... now we are lounging in VIP and finally at midnight they open the doors to the main stage and you see everyone rush in like a swarm of bees.  For the first hour, everyone was enjoying the music.  The DJ spinning was pretty dope, his name was/is DJ Spynfo.  I got to meet his manager in VIP. (I'm currently looking for a dope DJ to accompany me on my 2013 City Tour).  When I look down, I began to feel the tension amongst everyone waiting downstairs who were packed in and on top of each other like a box of melted chocolates.  It was now 2am, and Nicki was nowhere to be found.  "Is she performing?  Is she hosting?  Forget all those questions... Is she even COMING!?"  We were all stuck on stupid and continued to wait.

At approximately 2:30am Nicki is officially in the building across the way from us in VIP.  They shined a spot light on her and all her fans went crazy.  They were happy to finally see her after standing as early as 8pm, when the line began to form to about 2:30am, without any visuals on her.  She waves, blows kisses, steals the camera from this camera guy and captures some footage of the audience.  Shortly after, Nicki turns around and parlays with her crew and some others.  It's now 3am and NO-NICKI-anything.  You know New Yorkers keep is real so... they started to BOOOOOOOOOO her.  She seemed to be shocked, as if she was unaware that people were anxiously waiting and then signals for a mic to finally address her fans.  "Barbs.....!  Did you guys think this was a performance?" In her high pitch squeaky diamond-selling voice.  But her barbs didn't appreciate that.  DJ Funkmaster Flex then tells Nicki, "They want you to come down," (VIP was elevated in a Mezzanine).  So now her fans are like, "Yay, maybe now, she will do something worth the 50 bucks we paid for at the door," (I overheard).  She did something alright but it was NOT so exciting to NYC.  Once she hit the stage a swarm of random men crowded around her as she saluted and touched some of her fans, then requested for five "ratchet" females to come on stage.  After she takes her pick, she proceeds to publicly humiliate these women by having them dance on stage "ratchet-ly" while calling them ratchet and throwing one hundred dollar bills on them.  So... NY continued to BOOOOOOOO her.  Take a look at the footage and let me know your thoughts.

Just like that... Nicki was gone and everyone fled the club angry.  Disappointed.  All in all, Nicki is a dope artist and has opened many doors and inspired many females.  She has made a worldwide impact on many people.  Despite, all the ranting and raving I heard around me, I made a choice to enjoy myself that night regardless of the outcome.  To me, what was really important was being able to be in good company on Christmas day, meet new people, have health and the opportunity to be where I was.  I also learned a lot and brain stormed for my future throughout the night.

Hope everyone has been enjoying these winter holidays and also able to recognize the miracle in the moment of being alive; the miracle in seeing another second, another minute, another hour, another day... Happy Holidays.

We AV8TED

So... I love collaborating with dope underground artists that I know in my heart are about to BLOW.  I present to you... DotTheOne.  Lyrical genius.  NO! He's not just a Rapper.  He is a story, he is a lifestyle... He is... Man, I'm lost for words.  You would understand exactly what I mean when you listen to one of my personal favorites "Sunset in New York."

We performed together at a BBQ this summer, where I first heard his soul on "Sunset in New York."  He nearly brought me to tears.  From that moment on, I knew I had to get in the studio with him.  He's currently working on his first official EP "AV8TD" and I had to rudely interrupt him and get him in the studio with me.  You can expect to hear a great collaboration between DotTheOne and I on my next EP which is a compilation of acoustic cover songs from all around the globe (more details on that in a new blog).

For the time being you can catch DotTheOne at:

My BROTHER's from another MOTHER

Ladies and gents... bloggers all over the world, I introduce to you my two brothers from another mother.  Two amazing men who have helped me grow spiritually, mentally and musically; you'll hear me mention them often-->Edwin "Lil Eddie" Serrano and Hassan "HazALI" Abdus Salaam.

Eddie and I met as children singing in our local community choir (the New York City Housing Authority Youth Chorus).  The NYCHA Youth Chorus was our escape from the hustle and bustle of our neighborhoods.  Eddie coming from experiencing the loss of his home due to a fire, and me tryna find a place to hide from the reality of losing my father to HIV, the youth chorus was our sanctuary, our sacred place, where we got lost... in a good way.  As we got older, Eddie (at the time a Harlem resident) and I (living in the South Bronx) decided to move to Jersey City together.  Yeah, what were we thinking?  Lol... That young and quixotic decision led us to many good times together and strengthened our ties.  We learned about the cost of living, budgeting and the amount of work it takes to uphold a home and a family, which is what we became to each other.  We then moved to Harlem after a few life's twists and turns.  One opportunity led to the next pushing Eddie to Live in Los Angeles.  He's now a vocal coach on this season's XFactor and promoting his new single "I Die Everyday" which released on iTunes December 5th, 2012 so make sure you CHECK HIM OUT.  Pretty soon, we will be releasing a duet together called "Final Destination,"  but even SOONER, you can expect to hear a lot of noise about my first single "Runway" which we wrote alongside heavy hitting producer Echo (credited for working with Don Omar and Daddy Yankee).  You guys have no idea how much Eddie has been a part of the birth of Ruby the artist.... How much he taught me as a writer.  Check him out.  He is a musical force to be reckoned.

Now... Let's talk about Mr. HazALI for a second, the leader of the "forthelovers" musical crew.  When Eddie moved to LA, there was a huge void (though I never shared this with him) in me and that is where Haz stepped in.  Haz and I met at my last place of employment.  He said he did music, I said, "That's dope so do I."  He invited me out to his home studio and we exchanged some music... He was like, "Are you kidding me?  Ruby, what are you doing with these tracks?"  My response, "Well... I'm not sure.  I don't know how to get it out there."  He believed in me so much that he began to help me structure out how to package it and before you know it, after a couple of baby steps... I walked out with Entermission.  On August 21st we digitally released it and weeks later we were offered a distribution deal through E1 Entertainment to push an official release.  That's where we-at now.  Please check out HazALI's Vantage Point available at soundcloud.com/hazALI.  He is also a musical force to be reckoned with.

Ruby Teams up w/ Pony Zion of MTV/ABDC's Vogue Evolution

My team is in the works of forming a linkage with Devon "Pony Zion" Webster, choreographer of MTV/ABDC Season 4 Vogue Evolution.  Harlem born and raised Pony, has choreographed for multi platinum R&B recording artist “Ashanti”,  “Shaggy”, the late hip hop star, “Big Pun”, and even the biggest selling female recording artist of all time, Mariah Carey.  He is also highly recommended by star choreographer Laurieanne Gibson ( I LOVE LOVE LOVE HER)

Pony and I met as teenagers.  I was in a girl group at the time and he choreographed our shows.  Though it was supposed to be just business, I could not get enough of him and looked for him constantly outside of rehearsing.  We would talk about our favorite books such as "Conversations with God" and tap into what would begin the findings of our spiritual walks.  I even went to a few of his vogueing classes and learned how to duck walk, Lol.  Definitely need strong legs and above all confidence to nail the art of Vogueing.  Life has taken us up and down different pathways, but I am excited that we are being reunited by our successes.  I cannot wait to see what we come up with it.  After re-watching his "Took the Night" choreography on YouTube... I'm actually a bit scared->these dudes DEFY THE LAWS OF GRAVITY.

Entermission...

“Do not go where the path may lead; go instead where there is no path and leave a trail” - R.W. Emerson.

As of October 16th, 2012 I am an Undergraduate student of Walden University.  I obtained a Bachelors of Science in Child Development and managed to score a 3.4GPA, while also managing a full time job and personal life, hustling to build my catalog as a songwriter and compile several EP's.  I must say, this is a MILESTONE REACHED!!  The more I think of it though, I approached college with a very "get-it-out-of-the-way" mentality, and although I ended up getting so much in return..... Now, it is time to turn a new leaf and put much needed energy into something I have always wanted to do...... Impact people with my music. One person at a time.  It is time for me to go where there is no path for me to follow and leave a trail behind for others.  How do I do this?  Where do I start? What's next?

START?

Well for starters, I announce to you my very first EP titled "Entermission."  This title came by ways of a song called "Intermission," I demoed during my studies for a very close friend of mine and roommate at the time, Eddie Serrano, known artist/songwriter and NOW an official XFactor Vocal Coach.  When forthelovers crew leader, HazALI, heard this song, his creative juices got going and it jump started an open discussion about the EP title.  We evaluated where I have been in life and the things that are to come and talked about the importance of making sacrifices to fulfill our dreams. Therefore, Entermission represents the sacrifice of placing ALL THINGS ON HOLD to narrow in on a specific goal.  To activate tunnel vision and fulfill our purpose in life... or our mission for that matter.  To enter into our mission-->Entermission.

Entermission was digitally released 8/21/2012 to immediate family, friends and local fans and it created a huge online buzz, with collaborations from heavy hitters such as Echo, who has produced tracks for Don Omar and Daddy Yankee and Catalyst who laced "Revolver" for T-Pain.  On this EP you'll also find some smooth songs a-la-Janet swag and a cover song of a cover song (no that's not a typo) that Frank Ocean did of "Strawberry Swing" by European based group Coldplay.  Entermision is literally a vibe.  It is my lifestyle.  It is the story of my path and life experiences that drove me to pursue my dreams and is my pleasure to inform you that it will be nationally distributed courtesy of eOne Entertainment in 2013.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Please stay tuned and follow me on this journey.  Next week I am having a photoshoot for the first single titled "Runway," which was co-penned with Eddie Serrano and Echo (track details in another post...).  We are thinking of a HIGH-FASHION, Top Model get out my WAY type photo.  Lol.  Hopefully God combines all the right people and creates a divine team to make this dream shot happen.
